House

The house is located in the hills above Apt and enjoys superb views of Saignon, one of the most beautiful villages in the Luberon. The grounds have mature trees which offer shade and seclusion. A separate building near the pool provides accommodation for two. Historic Apt, with its famous Saturday market and wide range of shops, is ten minutes’ walk away. The most famous villages of the Luberon - Bonnieux, Lacoste, Roussillon, Gordes etc - are typically within 20 minutes’ drive. The house is of a good size (200 sq m) and comfortably accommodates 12 people. By arrangment the downstairs living room has a sofa bed which can also be used.  In addition one of the beds in the 2nd bedroom upstairs can be converted to a large double.  We ask you to convert these beds as required and put them back to original condition after use.

Guest access

The garden is 3000 sq m. with mature trees providing shade. Upstairs there is a large living/dining room (37 q m). The dining table seats 12 and the living area has two sofas, chair and a TV (cable/satellite). There is a south-facing balcony which enjoys stunning views towards Saignon. At the end of the balcony there are stairs down to the outside dining area and the pool. There are six bedrooms in total. Five are in the main house with a further bedroom (with its own en-suite) in a recently renovated stone building near the pool - the cabanon (cabin). This is great for teenagers! In total there are 2 double beds and 8 single beds. The middle bedroom downstairs is accessed from either of the adjacent bedrooms. The bedrooms are all of a decent size (13–17 sq m), .

Guest welcome

You will welcomed at the property at the time of your arrival by Laura who will show you around.

Neighbourhood overview

Being at the centre of the Luberon you can also more easily explore the villages further along the Vaucluse valley and major recreation sites nearby such as le Colorado Provencal - famous ochre hills where such things as tree-walking can be enjoyed. The area is great for cycling with serious routes between the villages and a long, level cycle path following the old train route from Coustellet through Apt and up into the valley.  Other activities include canoeing & kayaking (Isle-sur-la-Sorgue etc); tree-walking (zip-wires) Le Colorado Provençal at Rustrel and Lagnes; and golf – there is an excellent golf-course near Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (35 mins).  Full details of the village markets, sites to see and other activities will be provided. Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is situated between fast-flowing streams and is a major attraction, especially for its Sunday market. The major towns of Avignon (50 mins) and Aix-en-Provence (75 mins) are well worth a visit. The nearest coastal resort is at Cassis (c 90 mins).

Getting around

Direct TGV trains run to Avignon from London (Eurostar - about 6 hours). Cars can be hired at Avignon TGV. Also buses run to Apt and take about 90 mins). The house is 40 minutes from the Autoroute (A6 - Avignon Sud). Apt is about 700 miles from Calais - 10 hours driving. Or stop en route in Bergiundy (e.g. Dijon or Tournus) - and make the journey part of the holiday. From the house you walk down a steep lane for about 800m and you are in the centre of Apt with all the shops you could want. You can thus avoid the tyranny of having to drive everywhere, which you haveto do in more remote locations. Walk up the lane a few hundred metres and you are at the start of one of the great walks into the Luberon Hills.

Other things to note

The house is very flexible and works well for smaller groups. The small stone cabin in the garden near the pool is perfect for older children. The second living room downstairs with its own TV is good for the children or parents looking for some respite. The internet reception is good and the mobile phone signal is strong, unlike many more remote locations in the Luberon. Because Apt is lively all-year around (there is a small established cinema), the house is very relaxing outside the hot summer months. Many would argue that the area is at it best in May-June and September-October, outside the hot tourist season. The pool would be available and warm enough to use from May to September.
